Swedish-Swiss company ABB has been selected to deliver a new shore-to-ship technology to be installed at Her Majesty’s Naval Base (HMNB) in Portsmouth, UK.

Built over an area of more than 150ha with 10km of waterfront, HMND Portsmouth accommodates almost two-thirds of the UK Navy’s surface fleet, including frigates, vessels, the Fishery Protection Squadron, and Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

BAE Systems has been contracted for the delivery of the dockyard electrical systems and is currently installing ABB’s green power solution used to supply electricity to the navy’s high-power consumption vessels.

ABB Power Grids Division Grid Integration Business head Patrick Fragman said: “Providing Portsmouth Navy Base with a state-of-the-art shore-to-ship power solution will help enhance overall efficiency while minimising environmental impact.

“This project is another example of our commitment to sustainable transportation and reinforces our position as a partner of choice for a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

The shore-to-ship technology enables berthed vessels to shut down their diesel engines and derive power from the portside network in order to supply electricity to their on-board loads.

Based on medium voltage static frequency conversion (SFC) technology, the shore-to-ship power connections help save fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions, in addition to reducing the impact of noise and vibration on the local community.

ABB is delivering the SFC to BAE Systems as part of a complete package, which includes a dry-type 11kV to 6.6kV transformer and control equipment to interface with the dockyard’s electrical management system.

The green power project is scheduled to be completed next year.
