TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP — PECO crews are cleaning up this morning after a large transformer exploded at a PECO Substation adjacent to the Berwyn-Paoli Little League Field.
A thick column of black smoke could be seen for miles after the fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The explosion resulted in 1,300 to 1,500 gallons of oil spilled, causing a massive fire, according to Patty Mains, public information officer for Chester County Emergency Services.
The cleanup did not stop the baseball games from being played at the Field of Dreams, located behind the PECO substation.
Matt Gauthier, player agent for the Berwyn-Paoli Little League, said the players were notified of road closures but the games were not delayed.
PECO and flagger crews worked through the night and were at the scene early this morning guiding traffic and assessing damages.
An official report is expected to be available later today.
Route 252 at Bear Hill Road and Heatherstone Drive was closed for several hours during rush hour.
The Chester County Department of Emergency Service Haz-Mat Team and firefighters from Paoli, Berwyn and Malvern extinguished the fire.
