5 Tips To Actually Grow Your Social Media Following

The age old question (at least for us Millennial’s), right? How do you actually grow your social media following? This is more of a do as I say, not as I do blog post because I sit here with 530 followers on Instagram. And yet, I don’t take my own advice and follow these 5 tips below.

Consistency Is Key

This is likely the tip you’ve heard over and over again. So let me say it louder for those in the back – CONSISTENCY IS KEY – truly. If you’re only posting once every 5 days, you can’t expect your following to grow. Approximately 95 MILLION Instagram photos and videos are shared every. single. day.

So that means if you go 5 days without posting on Instagram, that means there have been 475 million posts that have gone up for other users to take it. You’re now essentially ineffective and unimportant in the Social Media world.

So let me repeat that one more time. Consistency. Is. Key.

# Hashtag

For those not trying to grow their Social Media following, hashtags may be annoying and overdone. But for those trying to grow a following, GOOD hashtags are essential!

Notice, I said GOOD hashtags. Meaning, you have to use hashtags that actually apply to the picture you’re posting. Don’t use #jlo if it’s not a picture of you and Jennifer Lopez standing together, capiche?

Use between 15 and 20 essential hashtags that have less than 600K tags. You can use up to 30 hashtags per image if necessary. Now, why do I say use hashtags with less than 600K tags? So your photo actually can be found. Otherwise, it’s likely that people are using that tag so frequently that you’re just going to continue to get lost in that 95 million statistic I mentioned before.

You can use more popular tags if necessary, just mix them in with other tags and use them sparingly.

Hot tip: Find Instagrammers that are in the same niche as you and see what tags they’re using. There may be one that you can add to your repertoire.

Be Seen AND Heard

Ah yes, that old phrase ‘be seen and not heard’ does not apply here. Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube and even YouTube stories. These are all such important tools and social media channels to use to build a following. Instagram stories alone on Instagram is likely to get your content out there more to potential followers and clients.

It’s easier to share REAL moments on Instagram stories. You can be real and candid without having to have that perfect lighting and get that ‘perfect shot’. Followers can connect with the real you and not just take your caption into their own context. It’s a great way to demo a product you love or share something funny with real emotion.

Basically, stories and video options are where it’s at.

Use hashtags, geotags and people or brand tags to make stories most effective.

Be Engaged

Seriously, this is a huge one. For one thing, reply to comments on your own posts. But another huge thing, make sure you’re commenting on other people’s posts. Not only does this have the potential to grab the attention of the person doing the posting but it also gets the attention of other commenters and maybe even lurkers of the post.

You are not too good to not be commenting on other people’s posts. Just like at a conference for a 9-5 job, you have to NETWORK. How do we do this in the social media world? ENGAGE with others.

Quality Content

Listen, if I’m being completely honest unless part of your brand is to talk about your dog or your dinner, no one cares about what you’re posting.

That’s a hard pill to swallow because I for one will always love posting pictures of my dog.

Frankly, people don’t care about what you like. They don’t want to see 700 images of your cat or your dinner. They want to see well lit non-grainy images that they can relate to. You’re not making this post for yourself, you’re making this post for your ideal follower.

And that’s a wrap, folks. Those are my tips for you today to start growing your social media following. I know it’s easier said than done but if you’re really committed to the cause, it can happen.
